September 24th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Former president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, promoted free trade as a way to curb illegal immigration to the United States while in Phoenix, Arizona yesterday.

 

Chinchilla, appearing with former Mexican president, Vicente Fox, spoke with local reporters after a roundtable discussion with Phoenix-area business leaders and government officials.

 

“We have to choose between either exporting goods and services from our countries as a result of jobs we are creating, or we will export our people,” Chinchilla said, adding that the goal of her visit was to find ways to create jobs and boost prosperity.

 

Fox, for his part, stressed the need for passing immigration reform in the United States, and for the country to reconsider its drug laws, saying that demand from the U.S. fuels the smuggling trade in Mexico.

 

“[…] do what the state of Washington is already doing, the state of Colorado, which is legalize … marijuana,” Fox said.
