Child missing after falling into uncovered manhole

September 22nd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A 10-year-old boy remains missing this morning after falling into an uncovered manhole yesterday afternoon.

 

The incident took place at 4:30pm yesterday near Alajuelita.  A strong flow of water caused by heavy rains apparently swept the boy away into the sewer system after he fell into the manhole.

 

Rescuers searched for the boy until 7pm yesterday evening and will resume the search this morning.

 

It is feared the boy may have been carried to the Tiribí River, where the sewer empties.

 

Manhole covers are often stolen by thieves to be sold to recyclers as scrap metal.

    Any one who steals a Man hole cover should be publicly beaten and get 5 yrs hard labor.Any scrap dealer who buys one should get the same or more.

      I totally agree! Also, Fuerza Publica and/or OIJ should visit every scrap dealer on a regular basis, and issue them a sternly worded warning of the criminal consequences of accepting material that is public property!

    Yep, the thief is now guilty of murder. It’s a universal human weakness, but I sure wish more folks in CR would think through the possible consequences of their infractions as well as the reason why they are wrong. Whether it be stealing man hole covers or driving in the dark without headlights (a pet peeve of mine) little infractions can have tragic consequences.

      I couldn’t agree more. Whomever stole the manhole cover is now guilty of at least manslaughter or negligent homicide of a minor, should the child be discovered dead, which as the hours wear on appears to be the likely result. There should be a special class of felony crime for stealing these manhole covers, as it has been going on far too long. It creates a true and present public danger. About 8 years ago I had the entire front axle of my car torn off and almost crashed into a tree as a result of one of these missing manhole covers. I also know, personally, two other people who have fallen into them, one woman, in her 50′s, broke both of her legs as a result and was immobile for the better part of year.

    Lets look at this from a Tico perspective. It was the little boys fault because he was unaccompanied and wasn’t watching where he was going. The thief who stole the manhole cover wasn’t at fault because he was poor and trying to feed his seven children. The idiot who bought the manhole cover wasn’t at fault because there are no laws written regulating what and from who is is allowed to purchase…..Nor is it required for him to record the ID of who he(or a pawn shop) purchases goods from.OIJ can’t go around looking because they don’t have gas for their cars and one of the tires is bad. Customs is holding tires given by the Chinese for impuestos until the assembly votes that these gift items shall not be taxed. They are on vacation right now.

    As to the sewer going directly to the river.
    It was necessary to spend billions for the mini gaza strip across the Nica border so 11 illegal squatters could have access to electricity. According to former vice- pResidunce Liarberger the sanitary upgrades in the central valley had to be deferred at this time.
    Pura Vida ! and don’t forget to put the chit paper in the trash can. We can’t have any evidence of the truth here.

    If these covers are used to access systems for sewage and water runoff, why not change them, one at a time with a simple locking system that would require a tool only the appropriate agencies have. This would at least reduce this problem.
