Five dead after fiery collision on Florencio del Castillo highway

September 4th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Five people were killed Wednesday evening in a collision between a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck when both of the vehicles burst into flames on the Florencio del Castillo highway near La Union.

 

Fire officials said four passengers in the sedan were trapped and burnt alive. The remains of a fifth passenger were located about three meters from the vehicle.  The driver of the commercial vehicle was unhurt but was treated after suffering a nervous breakdown.

 

The collision occurred about a kilometer before the toll booths in the San Jose-Cartago direction.

 

The identities of the victims have yet to be confirmed.

    According to the director of Trasito, Mario Calderon, there are three assumptions of the cause: speeding, mechanical problem of the vehicle or problems that occurred with the driver. The Transito director also stressed that it is important for the installation of the New Jersey type barriers on this highway. With them we would decrease the amount of people killed on this road.

    Another publication has identified all of the occupants of the vehicle and the fact that not one of them had a drivers license. The car had been borrowed for this outing so the driver did not drive a car on a regular basis. Witnesses also stated that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. All of these factors would indicate the cause of the accident. Jersey barriers may have saved the collision with the innocent truck driver but the blame should be directed to the inexperienced risky driver.

    I have been driving for 36 years and have driven in many other countries including the third world country of Afghanistan where there are basically no traffic laws or enforcement and CR drivers are the worst that I have ever encountered. These deaths are tragic but very preventable. This a daily occurrence in this country, usually involving motorcycles, and will continue until safety and accountability becomes a concern.
