August was a deadly month, led by homicides and motor vehicle accidents
September 3rd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) August was the deadliest month so far this year, with 102 deaths recorded due to unnatural causes.
Homicides and motor vehicle accidents accounted for more than half of those deaths, with 30 people killed using a firearm or knife. Another 30 died at the scene of a traffic accident. More than 120 people were also taken to the hospital in critical condition as the result of motor vehicle accidents.
According to officials, many of the homicides were related to the narcotics trade, with San Jose witnessing the highest figures.
Other causes of unnatural death included water-related accidents and electric shock.
More than 80% of those killed in August were men.
