Despite moderate magnitude, early morning quake described as ‘violent’

August 7th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Despite a moderate magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale, a 2:50 a.m. earthquake that struck near Acosta this morning was felt through much of Costa Rica’s Central Valley, with many residents describing strong, violent shaking.
According to the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the quake’s epicenter was about 11 kilometers from Acosta, striking at a depth of 20.5 kilometers.
Facebook and Twitter users in many areas of the Central Valley, including Heredia, Cartago, Escazu, Ciudad Colon, Puriscal, Orotina and even Jacó described strong, “violent” shaking accompanied by a “rumbling sound.”
The Red Cross has received no reports of injuries or damage.
