Marchers plan to block the Pan American Highway, about halfway between Cañas and Liberia, Guanacaste.
April 2nd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Residents of Bagaces, Guanacaste plan to block the Pan American Highway today. The community is located roughly halfway between Cañas and Liberia, which is likely to cause severe traffic problems both for those traveling to and from northern Guanacaste as well as the hundreds of trailers which travel the route daily.
Residents plan to gather at 6 a.m. at Bagaces’ central park, after which they will proceed to the Pan American Highway, where they plan to block traffic. The residents are protesting arsenic contamination of the community’s water supply, a problem that has been ongoing for two years.
Commuters are advised to use the Puente de la Amistad bridge (Taiwan bridge) over the Tempisque River as an alternative route.
