February 28th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Citizen Action Party (PAC) legislator, Carmen Muñoz is asking Security Minister, Mario Zamora, to justify the purchase of 50 luxury vehicles costing some $78,000 each by the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) intended for use by “higher ups” in the MSP.
According to Muñoz, an order placed by the MSP through the government’s electronic procurement system known as “CompraRed” on December 10th, 2013 commissioned the purchase of 117 vehicles from Purdy Motors, 50 of which are luxury Toyota Land Cruiser Prados at a cost of about $78,000 each.
“We want to know what reasons justify such a substantial purchase when we know that right now the Coast Guard is begging for resources to purchase equipment,” Muñoz said.
Muñoz sent a letter to Zamora yesterday afternoon requesting an explanation for the purchase. At the same time, Muñoz sent a letter to the director of the Coast Guard, Martin Arias, asking him to detail the most urgent needs of the Coast Guard.
“In times of deficit we have to be very careful how state resources are used,” Muñoz added.
