At least 97 injured in Zapote bullfights in 5 days

January 2nd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to numbers released by the Red Cross, at least 97 people were injured in the Zapote bullrings between December 25th and December 30th, including one U.S. citizen who was hospitalized after being gored by a 500-kilo bull.

Among those injured, 27 people required hospitalization.

The annual “bullfights” in Zapote are considered the largest of such events in the country.

Unlike some other Latin countries, “bullfighting” in Costa Rica does not involve the actual killing or maiming of the animal, but rather is an amateur event where untrained men enter the ring and taunt the bull.
