Coopelesca becomes first 100% carbon neutral electric company in Latin America

December 31st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Rural Electric Cooperative of San Carlos (Coopelesca) has achieved 100% clean energy production and has also become the first electric utility to be certified as carbon neutral in Latin America.

The award was made by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (Minae), which said Coopelesca could serve as an example for other electric utilities to provide cleaner energy.

Part of Coopelesca’s carbon neutral strategy is through carbon offset through the National Forestry Financing Fund.

Coopelesca began operation of the 22.4-megawatt Cubujuquí hydroelectric plant in Heredia this year.  The company plans to also certify the new plant as carbon neutral in 2014.

Besides offsets through the National Forestry Financing Fund, the energy cooperative has also taken other initiatives, including reforesting former pastures and a social responsibility plan that focuses on the development of communities where the company operates.
