I had the same initial reaction. Perhaps that was the red flag leading to discovery of the coke.

‘Shipping bananas to Costa Rica’ puts a new twist to the old “Coals to Newcastle” metaphor.

  • Marcel M. Pfister

There is a German freight line with a route from Hamburg-Le Havre-Guadeloupe-Martinique-Cartagena-Turbo-Limon and back to Europe. Turbo is in the middle of the swamps and is only a loading point for bananas to be shipped to Europe. The same ships also carry some passengers. When we deborded in Limon, the entire ship was searched by Costa Rica’s migration department as well as the Policia Control de Drogas (PCD) with sniffer dogs. Unloading boxes in Limon which were loaded in Turbo which – supposedly – had bananas as their content would altert anybody, really.
