Government will spend $314 million on “aguinaldo” holiday bonuses

November 21st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Ministry of Finance (Hacienda) will be depositing some $314 million (¢157 billion) in required annual holiday bonuses, known as “Aguinaldo” to an estimated 196,000 active and retired public employees on December 3rd.

 

The amount is a 9.83% increase from last year, and represents an average bonus of $1,602 USD per recipient.

 

Amongst the recipients are workers from government ministries, the legislature, judiciary, the Public Ombudsman’s Office, the Comptroller General, and government retirees.

 

“The increase this year compared to the year previous is basically explained by the growth of wages and pensions, as well as the increase in the number of beneficiaries,” said Edgar Ayales, Minister of Finance.

    Amazing coincidence that this is also the time of year that MARCHAMO must be paid and it also increased again this year. So who really gets the benefit?

    Only a nanny-state would accept that their “people” are not capable of understanding the concept of putting a little away (aka saving) for such things as Christmas gifts and so must build into the pay-formula this stipend. So much for teaching people personal responsibility. Now, if the government would be forthright and explain this Aguinaldo comes from the pockets of the taxpayers (for government workers) and from the employer (from private industry) — the Nanny is not in the business of creating wealth, only redistributing it. Anglo-sphere principles can work here, if the government would get out of the way and get out of the corruption business. Answer the question: what differentials Hong Kong from China, Singapore from Indonesia, Bermuda from Haiti. Hint: it’s not ‘liberalism” it’s not “geographics” — it’s the mindset of the Anglo-sphere and the concept that a rising tide raises all boats (a robust economy), rather than a socialized government.

    Most Tico’s have already spent their “13th aguinaldo check ” The stores,restaurants, Trip to the beach, short term loans,Charities all been anticipating this win fall and separated them from this money.January 15th they are broke and have more monthly payments. Saving and budgets is a concept for just the few here.. The rest spend, party and gamble. Then complain they have no money for school uniforms for the children. Repeat the same next year!
