Man stabs police officer eight times in Osa

November 11th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Police officers from Ciudad Cortés over the weekend responded to calls from residents in El Precario de Osa that a man was attempting to kill his wife, and were viciously attacked upon arriving on the scene.

The suspect, identified by the last names Guerrero Porras was apparently hiding in the dark, prepared to ambush the responding officers.  When one of the officers approached the scene, the man attacked, stabbing the officer eight times in the back, face, and neck.

Another officer intervened, receiving a stab wound in his right hand, but was ultimately able to subdue the suspect.  Both officers were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The suspect was taken to the jail in Palmar Norte.  Authorities are requesting three months of pretrial detention.

The suspect’s spouse, who survived the attack with unspecified injuries, is expected to file charges of attempted murder against the man.

Filing “attempted murder charges”! I thought you had to wait until the murder occurred in this land of justice before you could do anything? Most police agencies in other countries have a motto for the police: usually something like “serve and protect”. Since all the local police put on their car is “Fuerza Publica”, I didn’t think “serving” or “protecting” was part of their mandate. Could be wrong. A friend received threatening phone calls from a person she was aware of, had the phone number from where the call was placed; had witnesses as to threats made to her in person — police wouldn’t even take her statement, let alone do anything.

The police were witnesses to attempted murder when their fellow officer was being stabbed 8 times. I do not know their force continuum but when their life or another officer’s life is in danger deadly force should have been used. No question!
