Immigration Police will go on strike

November 4th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The general secretary of the National Association of Public and Private Employees (ANEP), Albino Vargas, told local media that Costa Rica’s Immigration Police will begin a strike on November 25th, after promises of an increase in the base salary of immigration police continue to fail to materialize.

 

According to ANEP, budgetary authorities have approved an increase in the base salaries of immigration police since 2009, but the increase has failed to make it to officers’ paychecks.

 

As part of a statement prepared by ANEP, the Immigration Police said they “are the most poorly paid police in the country.”

    Well, providing an armed escort to NGOs raiding nightclubs in order to illegally detain customers isn’t exactly police work in the public interest, so it wouldn’t bother me if these folks stayed on strike permanently. In fact, I can’t think of an instance when these cops were helpful. It takes them years and requires multiple tips as well as the help of local police for them to deport a single pedophile. The country might try doing without them for a year or two and seeing whether there’s any security loss.
