Updated: U.S. man in Playas del Coco throws himself in front of bus in apparent suicide

October 28th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A U.S. man who was staying in Playas del Coco was ran over and killed by a bus over the weekend in an apparent suicide.  The incident took place around 7:30 am on Saturday.

The man apparently left the Flor de Itabo Hotel in Playas del Coco in a taxi in the early morning.

At some point near the nearby community of Comunidad, 27-year-old Daniel Mazze Kenneth* attempted to throw himself from the moving taxi.

Then, according to witnesses,Kenneth attempted to throw himself in front of at least four passing vehicles, which were able to avoid hitting the man.

Appearing determined to end his life, he then threw himself in front of a passing bus, which ran the man over.

Rescuers responded to the incident, but Kenneth expired at the scene.

The remains were retrieved by the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) and sent to the Forensic Sciences Complex.

Authorities are investigating Kenneth’s motives for suicide.

*Editor’s Note: This story was updated and edited at 8:11 am, October 28th. There appears to be some confusion regarding the man’s identity.  Local daily, La Nacion, who was first to report the story, identified the victim as 40-year-old Kent Fuzze.  ICR is attempting to confirm the man’s identity with authorities.

At least four times?! Really?! And, no one intervened?! Wow! Maybe that underscores what is wrong with Costa Rica.

If someone is set on killing themselves, they will do it. You don’t know that people didn’t try to intervene.

I agree that someone set on killing themselves will find a way to do it. However, I cannot believe that witnesses saw four or five attempts, and no one was able to stop him.

probably happened really fast… no one could react or figure it out. who knows…

Motive: He didn’t want to live.

According to my contact at the U.S. Embassy his last name was Mazze.

What it was, his pain is now over & he is at peace! (sad for those that witnessed/were part of it though).

As editor, I’m going to go out on a limb here: I think his name is likely Kenneth Daniel Mazze, 27 years of age. Though I must point out we have yet to officially confirm this.

This is sad—let it go at that. You are correct–his pain is done—the real pain will now be with his friends and family. Trust me that is not my opinion but a fact based on my PERSONAL expeirience.
