Honduras: Child among 5 murdered
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (ISH) – A 5-year-old girl was among five family members who were killed during the early morning hours on Oct. 1 in the Chamelecón suburb of the city of San Pedro Sula, police said.
Police suspect the family was murdered in its residence by gang members for refusing to make extortion payments known as “war taxes.”
The killings continued what’s been a very violent time in Honduras, which was home to 88.5 homicides per every 100,000 residents in 2012, ten times the global median rate of 8.8, according to the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University.
