Hundreds of new police officers begin work this week

September 26th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Some 306 new police officers of the Fuerza Publica began patrolling Costa Rica this week, in addition to hundreds more that will serve in other capacities.

 

In total, the Fuerza Publica graduated 620 officers – 535 men and 85 women – during a ceremony on Monday.

 

“The new officers are part of the Security Ministry’s commitment to the public,” the Ministry of Public Security said in a press release.

 

Besides the 306 new officers who will take to patrol, others will be assigned to the Air Surveillance Service, Tourist Police, and management roles.

 

The Fuerza Publica has just over 12,000 officers in total.

    CR seems to lose alot of cops due to corruption and low pay. CR needs to place more cops who are honest in Puerto Viejo where the pot growers are never busted thanks to them paying off the cops. The east coast is extremely corrupt, the drug trade is out of control.

    Curious: You say that the Fuerza Publica has 12,000 officers and imply that this includes the tourist police, but I’m not sure what other divisions the Fuerza Publica includes. I would like to know how many cops CR has total. Aren’t the OIJ officers separate, as well as the immigration and now the health police? Do municipalities have separate police forces?

      Figure includes Fuerza Publica officers (including Muni’) Air Surveillance Unit, and Tourist Police, as well as office/administration staff who are duly registered ‘Fuerza Publica officers.’ Meaning that even though they may work in the office, they have the authority to arrest.
