UPDATED: Authorities searching for two US citizens lost in the mountains of Heredia

September 23rd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Red Cross workers have been searching since Saturday morning for two US citizens who are lost in a mountainous area near Barva de Heredia.

Rescue personnel resumed the search at 5 a.m. this morning for the two men, identified as Benjamin and Jediah Rearly Hernandez, originally from California.

This morning’s search is concentrated in Los Ángeles de Paso Llano in San José de la Montaña, according to Michael Montero of the Barva Red Cross.

Authorities were alerted to the situation on Saturday, when the girlfriend of one of the men alerted 911 after receiving a phone call from her boyfriend indicating that they were lost and injured.  The men have not been heard from since.

A police helicopter flew over the area but was unable to locate the men.

It is believed the men have only lived in the country for a month and a half and may have been unfamiliar with the area.

UPDATE (8:59 a.m.) The missing men have been rescued by Red Cross personnel.  Both were suffering from hypothermia.  The more critical of the men was airlifted to Hospital Mexico and the other was taken by ambulance to area hospital, San Vincente de Paul.
