Cartago residents declare President Chinchilla ‘non grata’ for celebration

September 13th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) This year, there will be two torches in Cartago.

 

The Torch of Liberty arrives from Nicaragua today, on its way to the city of Cartago.

 

President Laura Chinchilla will receive the Torch upon its arrival in the city and will lead the country in the singing of the national anthem at 6 p.m.

 

However, not all Cartago residents are welcoming the President.

 

Community organizations will hold their own parallel event in which they have declared President Chinchilla ‘non grata,’ and will have their own torch, in protest of Chinchilla’s government.

 

Organizers said that the National Forum, union organizers and other community organizations from across the country would be on hand to support them.

 

Organizers said that President Chinchilla has “broken all her promises” such as the construction of a new hospital, and has abandoned them.

 

The organizers said it would be a peaceful demonstration to repudiate “political practices that ignore the popular will.”

 

This year also marks the 450th anniversary of the city’s founding, and organizers said they hope their actions would revive democratic traditions that existed during the time of the city’s founding.

    Only way to change the bloated government is from the bottom up. I am looking for some Costarricense to rise above show leadership and fairness. The PLN and all other parties seem cut from the same cloth what can I get from the people. Lady Laura has been ineffective , feckless and Oscar Arias said, she lacks intellect for understand is limited… is so many words. Well if you think Johnny from the same PLN going to be different? I don’t think so either.

      From what I hear, the PLN has craftily and successfully managed to buy off most of the serious political opposition by handing their leaders government jobs and other spoils. The result is that while not many Ticos support the PLN, not many believe it will lose either. If something like this is true, it’s unfortunately unlikely that bottom-up uprisings will be very effective. Change needs to come from within the rival political parties, or more likely a coalition of them, and can only happen if they refuse the PLN’s offers in order to try to beat it outright. In practice, this may amount to asking people to turn down a cushy job in a PLN administration in favor of risking all to try to beat it, and I suspect that most people will take the cushy job.
