Four Canadians arrested in credit card cloning scam

September 12th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Four Canadians were arrested yesterday in Sabana Norte in San José on suspicion of cloning the bankcards of Canadian bank users and using them to withdrawal cash from ATMs around San José.

 

According to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) the suspects entered Costa Rica on September 7th and began withdrawing funds from ATMs around the San José area using cloned credit and debit cards of Canadian bank customers.

 

The suspects, aged between 25 and 36, were surprised by authorities while driving a vehicle yesterday around 1 p.m.  Authorities seized 225 cloned cards, $20,000 in cash and equipment used in the card-cloning process.

 

Agents from Interpol, the OIJ and bank investigators had the suspects under surveillance for several days.

 

Withdrawals were made at ATMs in Escazu, Santa Ana, Tibás and San José.

    You bad little Canadian’s ..I’m Canadian living in Costa Rica and I’m disappointed to hear some Canadian’s are being shady like that… we are all brought up to know better. I hope you’re all not allowed back in Costa Rica!!!

      Yikes!! Not good. Credit card cloning. I’m a Canadian who just left CR after 7 yrs, The crime has gotten much worst. Invited 6 friends over from Canada, while, on their first day here, they were buying groceries, the van got broken into and they lost everything they came with. Sorry to say. I really loved my time and friends there. I came here to try Grenada, and find it much safer for me ” and far less expensive as well”

        Being foreigners, their chances of incarceration may be greater than if they were Ticos. That having been said, how long would it be before they applied for and received permission to serve the rest of their sentence, or simply a portion of it, in Canada? As a Canuck, I am ashamed of these bottom feeders. I would prefer that they rot in a jail of the country in which they committed their crime.

          Under Costa Rican law they must serve half of their sentences (assuming they are found guilty and sentenced to prison, of course) here before requesting to be transfered to their home country to serve the remainder of their sentence. – Tim Williams, Editor.

          Side note, you can probably expect the Canadian authorities to bring their own, separate charges against them as well (as the dup’d cards were Canadian cardholders), so when/if they are transfered to Canada for the second stint of their sentence, they may face additional criminal charges and/or jail time.
