September 9th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A 50-year-old lawyer identified by the last name Vargas was arrested Friday on suspicion of making false registrations of properties in Guanacaste and Limon as well as vehicles in the Public Registry and then selling or mortgaging the property.
Officers of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) made the arrest, and managed to seize important evidence linking Vargas to the fraud.
The OIJ said they have received 20 complaints from victims of the fraud so far, but do not rule out that more victims may exist.
The lawyer apparently had the assistance of third parties whose arrests are expected in the coming weeks.
The Criminal Court of San José has issued three months of preventive detention for Vargas, considering him a flight risk.
