Security forces disperse protesting farmers with tear gas in Perez Zeledon

September 4th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Security forces in riot gear dispersed with tear gas some 250 corn and bean farmers who were blocking the Interamericana Sur highway at 2:20 a.m. this morning in Perez Zeledon.

The farmers were protesting what they describe as the “abandonment” of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) since the beginning of President Laura Chinchilla’s administration.

In order to end the blockade, the farmers were demanding a visit from the Minister of Agriculture, Gloria Abraham.

The MAG is a do-nothing ministry anyway. Animals get killed by neighbors’ insecticide/herbicides indiscrete use and the MAG doesn’t even answer the phone. All they know is how to stop allowing responsible/intelligent pet owners from bringing in beneficial medicine for animals (domestic and livestock medicaments) just so they can show off their “power”.

Failure to sit down and listen to the farmers is pathetic. Mag does nothing…
