Trails in national parks to be classified according to difficulty
August 26th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) has begun a process to classify trails in the country’s national parks by their level of difficult in order to help tourists identify the routes most appropriate for their physical condition.
The 5-level classification system is comprised of:
Class 1: Accessibility / Special Needs – Appropriate for those with special needs, suitable for those traveling with a cane or wheelchair.
Class 2: Family appropriate – Appropriate for families and groups.
Class 3: Intermediate – Little infrastructure or surveillance, but appropriate for relaxing walks.
Class 4: Challenging – Difficult terrain, guide recommended.
Class 5: Expert – Adventure routes that require special equipment.
In addition to obvious factors such as terrain, SINAC is also taking into account factors such as stairs, railings, restroom availability, water fountains, lighting, and volcanic gases.
SINAC said the measure would help eco-tourists make more informed decisions about the tours most appropriate for them based on their ability.
