First ICE, now Movistar billing for Internet based on consumption

iphone 5 launches in Costa Rica

August 13th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Movistar has announced that it will begin charging for its 3G Internet service based on the amount of data consumed, rather than speed.  The move comes after the same decision was made by ICE’s Kolbi service in recent days.

 

The new billing method will begin as of today.  Movistar will charge ¢ 8.8 per megabyte downloaded.  ICE’s Kolbi is charging slight less as ¢ 8.5 per megabyte.

 

Movistar will also offer a number of plans, including a weekly plan for ¢ 2,500 which includes 1 GB of download, and a monthly plan for ¢ 9,000 which will offer 3 GB of download.  Both of these plans offer a speed of 2 MB.

 

The changes only affect prepaid customers.  Post-pay customers will continue to pay their normal rate for both ICE’s Kolbi service as well as Movistar.

    Basically, if this is your only internet option (and, believe it or not, in many parts of CR, that is still the case), then forget about streaming audio or video ever again.
