Nuclear radiation scare in Osa yesterday

July 17th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) An accident involving a nuclear density meter caused authorities to issue an alert of possible radiation exposure in the environment yesterday afternoon.

 

The incident occurred two miles from Cuidad Cortez in the canton of Osa, Puntarenas.

 

The accident occurred when a nuclear density meter – a device used for the measurement of soil density and material properties – was crushed by a truck while performing roadwork. The device belongs to construction company, Hernan Solis.

 

Leonel Jimenez of the Fire Department said the device contains a radioactive pill that could have been exposed in the accident.  The roadway as closed as a result.

 

Authorities re-opened the route around midnight, after authorities confirmed the radiation level was safe.

 

The Fire Department, rescue personnel, hazardous materials crews, security forces, and the Ministry of Health all responded to the incident.
