July 16th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A 52-year-old banana worker was arrested on Sunday night by the Sixaola border police on suspicion that he raped a 6-year-old indigenous girl.
The incident occurred at the La Palma banana plantation, located six kilometers from downtown Sixaola.
The suspect was identified by the last name Guevara. He apparently convinced the girl to accompany him by offering her gifts.
The parents of the girl, who is an indigenous Panamanian, went looking for the girl after being unable to find her. They later located the child in the suspect’s home, who offered no explanation as to what she was doing there.
The parents said that loud music playing in the suspect’s home caught their attention.
The child was taken to the Tony Facio Hospital in Limon after the attack, where she remains hospitalized.
A judge imposed four months of preventive detention after questioning Guevara yesterday.
