Eight OIJ agents under arrest after removing prisoner’s handcuffs so they could fistfight

July 15th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Eight officers of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) and a prison guard were arrested last Thursday after a video emerged which showed one of the agents removing the detainee’s handcuffs in order to have a fistfight with the suspect.

The video allegedly shows an OIJ agent removing the handcuffs from a suspect in the basement holding area of the Courts of Justice in San José, before removing his own bulletproof vest, radio and his shirt in order to fight with the detainee.

A source close to the investigation said the video showed that two of the officials who had the man in custody threw the first blows.

The fight lasted several minutes while the other OIJ agents and a guard watched on.

The suspected ended up with a broken arm and other injuries.

Costa Rica the leader in human rights, yeah right there is so much police abuse here everyday, I fear the police as much as the criminals on the street they both have the common goal to steal from you

Then you’re living in the wrong part. The police of Cobano, Puntarenas is relaxed and friendly as well as the OIJ. They have my respect.

There are always a few bad apples in every bunch, but let’s not go to the extreme of attacking Costa Rica. If you live here please try and find ways to cultivate advancement and progress. If you only wish to “bash” everything about Costa Rica – perhaps you should live elsewhere. The OIJ are courteous, professional, and work hard for a very modest salary. Objectivity is not always easy when you jump to conclusions!
