CR insurers soon to be required to provide coverage to those over 65 years of age

July 15th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Insurance policies will exclude customers based on their age will disappear from the Costa Rican marketplace in the coming months, the Superintendent of Insurance (SUG) said last week.

SUG established a six-month timeframe for insurers to eliminate any age exclusions or requirements in the products they sell, saying that such exclusions are discriminatory.

The mandatory guideline comes after a judgment by the Constitutional Court on June 28th, in which a citizen filed a constitutional complaint when their private insurance company terminated their policy because the insured had turned 65.

“No insurance beneficiary may be excluded from any kind of personal insurance coverage, by the mere fact that he or she has reached a certain age,” the new regulation states.

Some insurers have said the new regulation will mean an increase in the cost of premiums, and possibly less coverage.

Strange thing is that our INS private insurance went from a little over $3000 a year to over $5000 a year once my husband and I reached 65. So if they are talking about “an increase in premiums”, just exactly what does that mean? A $2000 a year ripoff for husband and wife seems like an increase to me. “A rose by any other name is still a rose” — maybe SUG should look into this practice of discriminating against the aged as well.

OMG, does the court not understand insurance? There’s a reason insurance terminates after a certain age, duh, actuarial. I guess though the insurance companies can simply increase their premiums, charging like $5000 a month for a $5000 life insurance policy, and get people to voluntarily end coverage. I often wonder what the hell the court is thinking.
