July 10th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Alcides Arce Araya, an environmentalist in Osa, reported that he was shot at by hunters on Sunday. According to Arce, the incident took place as he was attempting to prevent men from hunting on his finca, located in Reserva Golfo Dulce in Osa.
Arce, 67, who is also known in the area as Alcides Parajeles and is described as an environmentalist, said he was at his home on Sunday afternoon when he observed several hunting dogs, at which time he saddled his horse to go investigate.
Arce said that when he saw the hunters on his property, he yelled at them to leave and that the area was private property. After his calls went ignored, Arce began to approach the men, when suddenly bullets began flying by him.
Arce said he filed a complaint after the incident, and has since received death threats.
“I am very ill and I hope that the [Prosecutors Office] can help me […] Either I am going to end up killed or having to defend myself, so I went to a lawyer who recommended I file a complaint,” Arce told local news site, CRHoy.
However, the Public Prosecutor in Osa, Luis Vega, refused to accept the complaint, citing a lack of witnesses and evidence to prove the attack.
