July 3rd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Detectives are investigating the residents of more than 350 homes after a fetus was found in a sewage treatment plant in San Blas de Moravia.
Pedrito Obando, a worker at the sewage plant, was preparing to clean a sewage tank when he discovered what he described as the “perfectly formed” body of a fetus of approximately six months of pregnancy. Obando said he carefully retrieved the fetus and immediately called police.
Police officers took charge of the scene until investigators from the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) took over. Investigators took the body to the Forensic Sciences Complex in San Joaquin de Flores where tests will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Agents are now questioning the residents of more than 350 homes in the area in order to determine where the fetus may have came from.
Though the cause of death is yet to be determined, voluntary abortion is illegal in Costa Rica. The case remains under investigation by the OIJ.
