June 12th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica played Mexico yesterday evening at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Costa Rica was generally favored to win the match, but by the 78th minute the score was still 0-0 and Mexican fans were growing frustrated.
That’s when Costa Rica’s Bryan Ruiz ran over to take a corner kick, and Mexican fans began throwing empty bottles and trash at the player.
One bottle struck Ruiz in the head, after which he doubled over in pain.
After the incident, Costa Rica was able to hold on for an additional 12 minutes and 7 minutes of overtime to secure a draw.
Mexico and Costa Rica are now tied in their race for the final CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying round.
According to the popular sports blog, Deadspin, hostile Mexican fans are known for throwing bags of urine and feces at opposing players at Azteca.
