genetically modified corn sign

June 10th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Municipal Council of Tilarán unanimously agreed to declare itself free of genetically modified crops, becoming the 57th municipality in Costa Rica to make the declaration.

The agreement declares Tilarán “as a territory free of transgenic crops, whatever their species or plant variety, which includes a prohibition on the use of seeds, cuttings, or similar, having within its original genetic material genes other than its own genus.”

The agreement also bans the granting of land use or operating permits for experimental plots.

The document also declares all varieties of maize as part of Tilarán’s cultural heritage.
