leatherback turtles

June 5th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Dozens of vigils will be held throughout Costa Rica today, commemorating World Environment Day and the life of Jairo Mora, an environmentalist who was murdered on May 31st.

Mora worked to stop the poaching of leatherback turtle eggs on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.

Mora was found shot, execution-style, on Moin beach, a nesting ground for the turtles he worked to protect.

Environmentalists and citizens throughout the country plan to commemorate Mora’s life and death today, through vigils that will be held throughout the country.

Some of the planned vigils include:

Limon: Vargas Park, 5pm

Puerto Viejo: Casa del la Cultura, 5:30pm

San José: In front of MINAE, 5pm
