Costa Rica joins Pacific Alliance

COLOMBIA-PACIFIC ALLIANCE-SUMMIT-FAMILY PHOTO

May 24th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica joined the Pacific Alliance as a full member yesterday.  The alliance so far consists of Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru.

The Alliance also approved the accession of seven new countries as observers: Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Honduras, Paraguay, Portugal, and the Dominican Republic.

To join the Alliance, Costa Rica first had to sign free trade agreements with member countries, which was accomplished on Wednesday with the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and Costa Rica, though Congress must still ratify the FTA as well as the Pacific Alliance framework.

President Chinchilla said that amongst other benefits, joining the Alliance could mean the elimination of visa requirements amongst member countries and greater assistance and support between embassies.

The Pacific Alliance officially came into being on June 6th, 2012.  The trading bloc represents about 36% of Latin American GDP, and if counted as a single country would be the ninth largest economy in the world.

The organization’s goals include free trade and economic integration, “with a clear orientation toward Asia.”

France? Portugal? What part of the Pacific do they touch?
And, it would be nice if – for a change – any Free Trade Agreement meant lower cost to consumers.

that only happens in countries where actual free trade exists. but the stinking hippies in the USA are trying to change that too. protectionism the likes of which Costa Rica and many countries have practiced makes poverty a certainty. so naturally the USA is following that route as a welfare state trying to make everyone poor so there is more need for government.

The stinking hippies in the USA? Like the ones at Woodstock? Wow man!! Peace.
