Canadian man gunned down in Escazu

May 17^th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Two men dressed as private security officers shot and killed a Canadian man yesterday in the El Roble subdivision in the Guachipelin area of Escazu.

Authorities identified the deceased as 42-year-old Brad Deering.

According to authorities, Deering was in his home with three other individuals, including a woman, at about 9am when two men dressed as security guards entered the property, threatening Deering and the others present at the home with firearms.

As the suspects tied up the other individuals and searched the house, Deering was able to escape from the home.  One of the suspects then gave chase, catching up with Deering in front of a neighbor’s home where the suspect shot Deering at least three times.  Deering was hit in the head by at least one of the shots.

After the suspects fled the scene, the other individuals that were present in the home were able to free themselves and flee in a vehicle.  Shortly thereafter, a neighbor alerted police, who responded to the scene.  The individuals who were present in Deering’s home during the crime returned shortly after to speak with police.  The three individuals were apparently unharmed by the perpetrators.

Authorities said yesterday that they believe the motive for the murder might have been robbery, though other sources believe that Deering’s murder may have been a revenge killing.

Posts on some Internet message boards from individuals claiming to know Deering speculated yesterday that Deering’s murder might have stemmed from his involvement in questionable business activities from which the man may have had enemies.  Deering was also not shy about flaunting his extravagant lifestyle.  Officers found three luxury vehicles at the home, including a Porsche, Audi, and Lotus.

Deering’s body was taken to the Forensics Laboratory in Heredia.  Deering had been living in Costa Rica for 8 years, according to authorities.
