Group is calling excessive increases in fuel, electric prices unconstitutional
April 18th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A group of citizens has brought charges of unconstitutionality to the Defensoría de los Habitantes (Ombudsman), alleging that the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) uses an unconventional method to determine market prices.
In 2012, there were 13 increases in fuel prices in the country, and this year has already seen four increases at the pump.
The group asked the Defensoría to support an action of unconstitutionality against ARESEP, regulator Dennis Meléndez, and former regulator Fernando Herrero.
Olman Bonilla, a representative of the citizens group, said that they have also sent a complaint to the Comptroller General, in order to bring pressure from several angles.
Ombudsman Ofelia Taitelbaum said her office would study the text presented and ensure compliance with the law.
