Only 12.8% of cars stolen in Costa Rica are ever recovered

April 16th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) recovered only 12.8% of all the vehicles that were stolen in 2011 and 2012, and does not have a figure for how many people were arrested for the crime, according to information provided to local media by the Crime Analysis Unit of the Judiciary.

 

Data provided by the department indicate that 8,653 vehicles were reported stolen nationwide during 2011 and 2012.  Of those, only 1,109 were ever recovered.

 

San Jose tops the list for stolen vehicles in the last two years, with 1,783 stolen vehicles in 2011 and 1,473 in 2012.  The capital city is followed by Alajuela in second place, followed by Heredia in 3rd, Limon in 4th, Puntarenas in 5th, Cartago in 6th, and Guanacaste with the fewest number of vehicle thefts.

    Maybe something like Lo Jack a tracker device hidden somewhere in the car would help. Also beef up the laws for stolen cars and actually throw the thief’s in prison.. Not just a system of catch and release.

    Well, the OIJ is recovering about 40% fewer cars than is typical in most of the developed world. It is exceedingly easy to re-title these cars in nearby countries. As for using Lo Jack, OIJ cannot get the police to operate a fully functioning 911 service. Unlikely these numbers are going to improve much for OIJ.
