April 15th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A homeless man who was drunk and was arrested for disorderly conduct, set fire to the two cells of the police building in Parrita, Puntarenas.
The incident occurred Wednesday evening while only two officers were on duty at the facility.
The 41-year-old suspect, identified by the last name Umaña, suffered serious burns to his back and arms while still trapped in his cell. He was taken by ambulance to the Red Cross clinic and later taken to the Max Teran Hospital in Quepos, where he was later said to be in stable condition.
The Fire Department said that fire consumed an area of 20 square meters, but 80% of the building suffered smoke damage.
The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) said it was waiting on a report from the Fire Department in order to determine if charges of arson would be brought against the man.
