Boeing 737 with 149 passengers makes emergency landing after takeoff at SJO

April 2nd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) What is being described as an electrical failure aboard a Boeing 737 carrying 149 passengers forced pilots to return to the Juan Santamaria Airport shortly after takeoff yesterday for an emergency landing.

 

The aircraft was able to return to the airport and perform an emergency landing without incident.

 

According to Freddy Roman of the Red Cross, airport authorities will conduct an investigation into the incident.

 

The flight left Costa Rica at 8:30am, bound for New York.

    OK, maybe a little more information would be helpful…
    what airline was it?
    was it an actual electrical problem, or some false indicator?
    how long after it took off before the problem occurred and the flight returned to SJO?
    was the problem able to be resolved or fixed?
    did the flight eventually depart SJO?
    was the 8:30am departure the originally scheduled departure or the departure after it returned to the airport?

      Bill, there was an actual electric problem, not a false indicator, though we have no further info at this time. The flight was not airborne for very long, though the specifics are still vague. The 8.30am departure was as originally scheduled, and the plane returned to the airport shortly thereafter. The airline involved has not been disclosed to ICR at this time.

      Bill, we’ve found out it was an American flight.

    “an emergency landing without incident”? I think turning an aircraft around, announcing a problem, and making an emergency landing, in and of itself, is an incident. Let’s not minimize the situation–I’m sure those aboard were quite tense and relieved to walk away.
