April 1st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 29.8% of Costa Ricans will be obese by 2015.
The WHO said that misinformation about the causes of obesity and how to combat it is part of the problem leading to widening waistlines in Costa Rica and other Latin American countries. The WHO says that 26% of all people living in the Americas are obese.
Obesity, a leading cause of heart disease, diabetes and hypertension amongst many other ills is beginning to overwhelm health services throughout the region, and is increasingly affecting younger people.
The Social Security Fund (CCSS) estimates that this year alone it will spend more than $6.6 million on surgeries to treat the morbidly obese.
