Love seafood? Puntarenas seafood fair is today and tomorrow

March 22nd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Today and tomorrow is the Puntarenas Seafood Fair, an event organized by the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (INCOPESCA), with support from the National Production Council (CNP).

 

As part of the fair, an agreement will be signed between the CNP and the Ministry of Justice that will support small scale fisherman in Costa Rica.

 

The Seafood Fair will be today and tomorrow between 9am and 5pm at the docks in Barrio el Carmen in Puntarenas.

 

Visitors can enjoy tranditional dances, taste different products and buy oysters, fish, and other seafood at competitive prices.

    Will they really have oysters? The only seafood I was ever able to get in Costa Rica was Tuna, a version of red snapper, shrimp, and Tilapia (which certainly should NOT count as seafood in anyone’s lexicon of proper terminology). I asked for crab, lobster, and oysters repeatedly, only to be told that they simply were not available. So, how is it that oysters are suddenly present?

    Oyster have always been present, but they were wild Oysters, and only locals from the little villages knew how and where to find them in the Gulf of Nicoya. Now Incopesca have worked with families from four different regions in the Gulf to setup aquaculture of Oysters, by the end of the year they will be able to sell 200,000 per month.
