Heading to the beach? Authorities warn of strong swells this weekend and Semana Santa

March 22^nd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Authorities from the Research Center for Marine Sciences at the University of Costa Rica are warning beachgoers of strong swells on the Pacific coast beginning today and lasting through Semana Santa.

Oceanographer Omar Lizano said that strong swells both today and tomorrow could be dangerous for swimmers.

Lizano said that the strong seas are coming from the South Pacific, and could cause riptides that are hazardous for beachgoers and swimmers.

Lizano said that next week during Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) that swells with waves of up to three meters high could threaten beachgoers’ safety.  Lizano recommends entering the water only at low tide, and avoid getting in the water if you cannot swim.

He also warned to keep a close watch on children and the elderly.
