17% of Costa Rican women work as domestic help

 

December 19th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) 45.4% of Costa Rican women worked in 2012, for the second consecutive year.  Of this percent, it is estimated that 17% work performing paid domestic duties.

 

The 2012 Labor Overview Study, presented by the International Labor Organization, revealed that the unemployment rate amongst is 9.6%, close to 3 points higher than men.

 

Costa Rica has the third lowest minimum wage for domestic employees in the study, after Argentina and Panama.  The average work week is 34 hours.

 

Mauricio Dierckxsens, Labor Specialist at the International Labor Organization, said that the average age of these women is approximately 40 years old, though there are a high percentage of younger women as well.

 

Only 25% of the population that works in paid domestic duties is registered in the Costa Rican Social Security System (CCSS or Caja).
