Transit Police will be out in force this Holiday Season
December 7th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Transit Police have announced their plans to keep Costa Rica’s roads, highways, and celebrations safe this holiday season, both in the San Jose greater metro area as well as the highways leading to popular end-of-the-year beach getaways. In total, 764 transit police officers will be involved.
In the San Jose area, The popular “Festival de la Luz” celebration on Paseo Colon, the “Tope,” the “Carnaval,” the lighting of trees and public institutions, as well as the cyclists race around Costa Rica, are some of the activities that the Transit Police will be watching over.
The Transit Police will have 200 officers tending to the “Festival de la Luz,” on Saturday, December 15th, while 60 officers will watch over “El Tope” (December 26th), 20 more will be working the “Carnaval” in Desamparados, and 20 officers will be in charge of cyclist race.
The Transit Police will keep their focus on the greater metro area until December 24th, as many people come to the city for last minute Christmas shopping in addition to the festivities.
Beginning on Christmas Day, officers will shift their focus to the roads and highways leading to the country’s popular beach destinations, such as the Inter-American Highway, the Costanera, the highway to Limon, as well as the road between Limonal and the “La Amistad” bridge in Guanacaste.
Officers will have a total of 118 speed checkpoints, giving special emphasis to roads that lead out of the city.
There will also be 52 police checkpoints looking for drunk drivers both during the day and during the night. Authorities have stated that drinking and driving will be one of their priorities.
12 police officers will also maintain the peace at the Zapote festivities.
