A Fish out of Water

Very few, if any, sportfishing enthusiasts came back disappointed or empty-handed after another excellent week of fishing all along Costa Rica’s famous Pacific coast. Wahoo figured prominently. Starting up north, Flamingo to be specific, the family on a half-day charter with Captain Skeet Warren on the 42ft Bushwacker got one more Wahoo and a small Yellowfin Tuna after this photo was taken.

Moving south, out of Tambor on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Captain Octavio Nuñez on his new 26ft panga caught several 25lb Dorado inside the Gulf of Nicoya.

And further south, now at Los Sueños Marina in the Central Pacific, the top-rated team of Captain Alex Holden and mate Russ Nixdorf on the 32ft Miss-Behav’in had several super days. On one day out, they enjoyed an entire sportfishing panorama, as the tally stood at two Wahoo, two Dorado, one Yellowfin Tuna and a Sail release. They followed that up with a day when they went 4 for 4 on Sails, caught three Dorado and a nice Wahoo.

And our last stop: the  new Pez Vela Marina in Quepos, 30 minutes south of Los Sueños. Captain John Weisenstein on the 34ft Sea Quester released two Sails and caught 13 Dorado fishing offshore on November 26; then followed it up on the 27th with two Blue Marlin releases (one estimated at 450lbs, the other at 350lbs), seven Dorado (one 55lbs) and a Wahoo.

Catching billfish on the fly is a tremendous sportfishing thrill. Captain  Manuel Gabuardi on the 31ft Good Day out of Los Sueños Marina offers his expertise and a range of flyfishing gear (clients have to bring their own flies, of course, and if they prefer, their own rods and reels) for those adventurous anglers who give it a shot. The boat carries #13 Sage Rod and Billy Pate Reel, plus #14 Thomas, Orvis and Thomas rods.
