Figueres proposes the creation of two new provinces in Costa Rica

November 27th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) On Monday morning, former Costa Rican president Jose Maria Figueres, presented the first set of proposals of his Vía Costarricense- Proyecto País plan (“The Costa Rican Path – Country Project”).
The proposal suggests the creation of two new provinces, one in the north that covers the territories of Upala, San Carlos, Los Chiles and Guatuso; and the other in the southern area of the country, that would bring together the towns of Perez Zeledon, Golfito, Coto Brus and Buenos Aires.
Some of the other proposals include using sports as a means to reinforce values and Costa Rican identity and a petition for the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) to generate more solar energy.
Figueres would also like to see more of the country’s important decisions to be decided by national referendum, as the Legislative Assembly can rarely reach a consensus.
The plan also calls for Costa Rica to be “oil-free” in 15 years.
The current President, Laura Chinchilla, said that her government is always open to new ideas.
The second report of the “Country Project” will be presented in the first semester of 2013, and will cover topics including infrastructure, health, education and security.
