Drunk driver kills woman, flees the scene

November 27^th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Marta Zamora Lopez, a 48-year-old wife and mother, lost her life after a Sunday visit with friends.

Zamora was walking home in Bonafacio de Penshurt, Limon, when she was struck by a pickup with a drunk driver behind the wheel. Reports say the woman died instantly.

Zamora was walking alongside her husband, Jose Guevara, who did not suffer any injuries. The incident occurred at 6:10 pm.

The driver did not stop, and instead fled the scene. The impact was so strong that Zamora was thrown about 15 meters from where the vehicle struck her.

Leandro Fajardo, a Red Cross first responder, was first to arrive at the scene. Fajardo declared the woman dead. Hours later, the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) removed the body.

The Fuerza Publica (Public Police Force) conducted a search and arrested the driver in San Clemente. An alcohol test revealed that the man had 1.75 milligrams of alcohol per liter of blood, far beyond the legal limit.

The driver remains in custody.
