PLN chief faces lawsuit over boulevard
November 25th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) National Liberation Party (PLN) chief Fabio Molina is facing a lawsuit for alleged misuse of public funds while mayor of Alajuela, between 2002 and 2006.
A man by the last names Urbina Solera brought the charges against Molina in the District Attorney’s office in the 1st Judicial Circuit of the province of Alajuela.
According to the report, the former mayor played a leading role in the construction of a boulevard costing more than 1 billion colones, (about $2 million USD), which was constructed without permits from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).
Molina was unaware of the charges until local media brought it to his attention. Not fully aware of the charges, his initial statement was that the charges “made no sense at all.”
Later, Molina said that the construction was not carried out during his term as mayor.
The current mayor of Alajuela, Roberto Thomson, contradicted Molina, and assured that the construction had occurred towards the end of his (Molina’s) administration.
Thomson said that 220 million colons (about $440,000) would now have to be used to destroy the boulevard, which is approximately 10 blocks long, stretching from the Municipal Theatre to the corner of the Juan Santa Maria museum.
The man who pressed charges requested Molina’s immunity be removed. The legislator responded that he would be more than willing to resign the privilege.
“My life has been lived within the highest moral standards,” he said.
