Nicaragua’s Lake Managua has grown 40 square kilometers in two years

NICARAGUA – November 25th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Lake Managua, the second largest lake in Nicaragua, is larger in area today than it was two years ago, according to a study by the Regional Visualization and Monitoring System (SERVIR), the agency dedicated to research in geographic information systems.
According to the study, in 2010 Lake Managua, also known as Xolotlán, measured 1,058.7 square kilometers. In a measurement carried out in October of this year, SERVIR discovered that the lake had grown to encompass 1,098.9 square kilometers.
This means that Lake Managua grew 40.2 square kilometers in two years, representing a 3.8% increase in its total size.
The growth of the lake is attributed to increased rainfall in the past 14 years on the San Juan River basin, which includes Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua, the country’s two largest lakes.
Between October 2010 and October 2011, the Government of Nicaragua was forced to relocate nearly a thousand families living on the shores of Lake Managua to higher ground.
