November 12th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Have you ever received a text message saying that you earned a large prize, a trip, or a car? Don’t get your hopes up.
The majority of these messages ask for money in return for receiving your non-existent “prize.”
The text messages offer trips, cash and even the latest new vehicles.
According to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), these types of frauds increase as we approach the holiday season.
According to ICE, most of the messages are sent from correctional facilities, while others come from countries such as Ecuador and Guatemala.
Authorities remind the public that one should never have to part with their own money to claim a legitimate prize.
ICE says it receives at least 80 such fraud reports every day.
The company asks that consumers report such messages by calling 800-DENUNCIA.
