Crane removed, process of dismantling Bailey bridges begins on General Canas
November 9th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) The crane that caused one of the Bailey bridges on the General Canas Highway to collapse was finally removed yesterday afternoon.
Now, crews from the National Road Council (CONAVI) have begun dismantling the Bailey bridge on the Alajuela-San Jose side of the highway.
Cristian Vargas, Road and Bridge Conservation manager, stated that they expect to have the task completed by today.
A large concrete drainage tunnel has been built underneath the bridge, and some of the space between it and the roadway has already been filled.
Vargas said last night, “We are currently working on the second bridge, and we have already removed the asphalt slabs. We will then dismount it little by little, as it is usually done. We expect to be finished with it by tomorrow.”
Vargas said that they began to work on the 2nd bridge first, rather then the one that had collapsed, as the crane which caused its collapse is still on the scene. It was placed on the side of the road until the company that owns it can have it removed.
Once the bridges are dismantled, the construction company, MECO, will continue to work on filling the part above the concrete tunnel. The company plans to begin placing asphalt in the Alajuela-San Jose direction on Saturday.
